Tomorrowland is on every dance music lover's bucket list, and with good reason. Since its inception in 2005, the festival has grown to one of the best in the world, rivalling even the largest scale festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury.
However, Tomorrowland isn’t like every other music festival out there. On a scale unto itself, the festival has its own currency, town and a lineup featuring some of the best names in the business. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the town of Boom, Belgium (yes, that’s its real name) every year to experience the euphoric, uplifting atmosphere that Tomorrowland organisers have created.
As we creep ever closer to this year's edition, here are just 10 of the reasons why Tomorrowland is an unmissable festival.
The Stage Production
Probably the most well known aspect of the Tomorrowland brand is their unbelievable, out-of-this-world stage production. In relation to their annually changing theme, the festival has over 10 giant stages to house the insatiable 400-piece lineup. Some of the favourite previous stages include a giant circus extravaganza (2017), The Rose Garden Stage which featured a giant mechanical dragon's head (which is now a fixed feature every year since 2016) and the immersive underwater experience created with a giant, golden seahorse centre stage (2018).
The Lineup
With a lineup that features hundreds of artists, Tomorrowland consistently curates a selection of the best DJs in the dance music field. Many favourites have performed at Tomorrowland over the years with names like David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Tiesto, Afrojack, Adam Beyer and Carl Cox among them.
The lineup for 2022 has yet to be revealed, but you can expect a similar calibre of artist as years gone by making an appearance for their grand comeback.
Memorable Moments
A bucket list special for EDM lovers all over the world, there have been many incredible moments that have happened over the years at Tomorrowland. Starting with Armin Van Buuren announcing the birth of his son Remy moments before his set in 2013 or the beautiful tributes to famous DJ Avicii that were performed all over the Festival after his death in 2018. Many DJs see the festival as the place to reveal new music, announcements and collaborations - it's like the Super Bowl of electronic music.
DreamVille
DreamVille is Tomorrowland's own town, fit with everything you need for your stay; a vibrant city that welcomes people from all different cultures to create international friendships. With jewellery shops, hair and makeup salons, and lots of restaurants and food shops, there is so much to do in DreamVille when you aren’t witnessing the incredible performances.
Money Doesn't Exist (as you know it)
Tomorrowland organisers want to remove their guests from the real world and take them away on a magical journey. The truly immersive experience includes the festival's own currency named 'Pearls' which are used instead. You can use your pearls to pay for drinks, food, services and souvenirs.
The People of Tomorrow
Imagine hundreds of thousands of people from over 200 countries coming together to celebrate their love of electronic music. With the festival creating an environment of love and acceptance, you can expect to see people from all over the world connecting and uniting, despite their differences.
In 2015, the then Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, visited Tomorrowland and said, "Young people today are growing up in a world full of change. Tomorrowland demonstrates that it's possible: tens of thousands of people coming together in peace and respect for one another to share a weekend".
The Hymn of Tomorrowland
If you’re an avid movie fan you may have heard the name Hans Zimmer before. The composer has created music for some of the best movies out there including Gladiator and The Lion King. However, the famous composer also created a national hymn for Tomorrowland in 2014 which has been featured as part of the festival ever since.
The Costumes
We may have seen a spike in festival attire in the past years with social media influencers leading the way with out-there outfits, but this has been a staple at Tomorrowland since it began. On site you are encouraged to wear whatever you please, the sparklier the better, to fit in with the smorgasbord of characters who wander the site dressed to impress.
Belgian Cuisine
Now we’ve told you all about DreamVille, but you can find amazing restaurants featuring some of Belgium's best cuisine. Normal festival food usually features burgers, pizza and limp chips, however at Tomorrowland they’ve upped their experience to bring you something special. In the restaurants expect to find Belgian wonders such as Moules-frites, Chicons au gratin and (of course) waffles.
The Experience
Every year, it is a battle amongst the people to obtain tickets to Tomorrowland, with many people trying year on year and failing. The mere excitement of the vent begins the moment you get your ticket, with Tomorrowland flights available with Festicket from 17:00 CET on 27th February 2022.
Tomorrowland is truly an out of-this-world experience that many remember for the rest of their lives. With incredible firework shows, friends all over the world, incredible food, an unbelievable lineup and one of the best festival experiences out there.
