The festival that started it all...
Unrivalled in festival folklore, the Isle of Wight Festival is the UK’s very own version of Woodstock.
After two great events in 1968 and 1969, which featured shows from The Who and Bob Dylan, a final festival in 1970 saw some 600,000 music lovers, hippies and freaks attend and Jimi Hendrix play his last-ever gig. The local council had seen enough though, and passed a law to prevent anything similar happening on the Island again.
Fast-forward to 2002 and the festival was reignited with stars like Robert Plant and The Charlatans. Today it hosts the biggest acts in rock, pop and dance and is partial to bringing together bands for reunions or putting on exclusive shows.
With a main outdoor stage, a big top and several small, more intimate arenas, there is plenty of music on offer, while a fairground and tents with comedy, cabaret, spoken word and quizzes make sure there is entertainment all weekend.
