Tyler, the Creator
From teenage tearaway and polemical provocateur to thoughtful and theatrical artiste, the journey of Tyler, the Creator has never been boring.
Erupting into the hip hop underground as the de facto leader of game-changing rap collective Odd Future (aka OFWGKTA), which kickstarted the storied career of not just Tyler but fellow members and affiliates Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, Syd, and The Internet, his earliest output flirted with, and sometimes openly embraced, controversy – resulting him reportedly being barred from entering the UK for a number of years.
But as he has aged, evolved and developed, the lyrical themes have become more palatable, the attitude less confrontational, and the music more richly layered and masterfully produced. With the release of both Flower Boy and IGOR, Tyler has cemented his place as one of the scene's most creative and interesting figures – spanning hip hop, R&B, soul, jazz, funk, pop and more.
And this development has seen him take to the biggest of stages, not just at his own festival Camp Flog Gnaw, but also at the likes of Glastonbury, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Gov Ball, Dour, Primavera Sound and Best Kept Secret, with plenty more festival appearances in the pipeline.
