Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco

Cheeky and charming are the words often bandied around in conjunction with Mac DeMarco's personality.

Not that surprising really; his pseudonym is the 'Pepperoni Playboy' due to his affection for pizza and partying. Though it's not solely his infectious smile and goofy on-stage antics that's captured the imagination of critics and a fervent legion of fans, whom of which are typically decked out in plaid shirts, scruffy Vans, and bargain-bin baseball caps.

Creating a sound that’s fairly difficult to categorise, dubbed as ‘jangle-pop’, ‘slacker rock’ or oddly ‘jizz-jazz’ by the man himself, DeMarco has a knack of writing soulful indie tracks that are concurrently melancholic and pit-party-starting. He caught the attention of the Pitchfork elite with his first three full-length releases Rock and Roll Night Club, 2, and Salad Days, and duly became a burgeoning cult icon due to his love for one brand of cigarette in particular - ‘Ode To Viceroy’ is just that.

Accolades flowed in his direction, but it was his live performances that caused the buzz; hanging from the rafters, unironically telling ‘dad jokes’, and inviting random crowd members on stage to partake in the chaos excited us with the unpredictable nature of his shows.

Mac DeMarco’s festival performances are a sight to behold which is why Primavera Sound, Rock en Seine, Pitchfork Music Festival Paris, and Eurockeennes continue to invite him back.

With slots at All Points East, Best Kept Secret, and Primavera Sound impending, the festival circuit is looking substantially more exuberant with Mac on the lineup.
