Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey

Evocations of classic Hollywood glamour. Sultry and cinematic melancholia. Love letters to the 1950s and 60s American culture. The aforementioned listed conjures just one name in contemporary music; Lana Del Rey.

Stylized on the West-Coast glamour and hopeless romance of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and channelled via the suburbs of Upstate New York was how Lana Del Rey forged her peerless aesthetic.

Whilst working as a waitress and playing club shows around the Big Apple, Del Rey released a series of unsuccessful albums under her real name ‘Elizabeth Woolridge Grant’. It wasn’t until ‘Video Games’ and ‘Blue Jeans’ went viral on YouTube in 2011, however, that Del Rey was noticed and signed to a major label.

‘Born To Die’ (her second album under the moniker Lana Del Rey) was an instant success reaching No.1 in 11 countries worldwide. BRIT Awards, MTV Awards, and Grammy Awards/nominations soon followed.

Her exquisite performance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage back in 2014 opened her up to an entirely new audience, not just those who follow the mainstream charts.

Following on from this lauded appearance she has become a mainstay on the circuit, slowly rising up festival bills at the likes of Governor’s Ball and Coachella, eventually reaching the summit of festivals worldwide with headline slots at Flow Festival, Øyafestivalen, and Sziget.

‘Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind’ from Lust For Life is an ode to the sun-soaked festival atmosphere, ostensibly cementing Lana Del Rey within the present-day festival zeitgeist.
